Garbage Sharing

A web app that lets Ottawa neighbours share their unused garbage bin slots. Free, invite-only, first come, first served.

Garbage Sharing app home page — share a garbage slot with your neighbors

Three bins, every two weeks

The City of Ottawa limits households to 3 garbage bins per bi-weekly collection. Some weeks you don't need all your slots; some weeks your neighbour has more garbage than theirs allow.

Garbage Sharing connects the two: when you don't need all your slots, you share them, and a neighbour who needs extra capacity can claim them.

Five steps, zero hassle

  1. Join with an invite

A neighbour shares a 6-character invite code with you.

  2. Share a slot

Post how many bins (1–3) you have free for an upcoming collection date, with optional notes.

  3. Claim a slot

Browse available slots nearby and claim one. Once claimed, it's removed from availability for everyone else.

  4. Invite neighbours

Generate and share your own invite codes to grow your street's network.

  5. Never miss garbage day

Set your pickup schedule to see a countdown to your next collection, get a nudge to share unused bins on collection day, and download a recurring calendar reminder (.ics) with an evening-before alarm.

Never miss garbage day again

Tell the app your pickup day once and it keeps track of your every-other-week cycle — a countdown on the home screen, "bins out tonight!" alerts, calendar sync, and a friendly nudge to share your unused bins at exactly the right moment.
